"Till the cows come home!"
|
Cows coming home after milking is still a
typical scene in rural Ireland |
"Until the cows come home" is an idiomatic expression which means, "for a very long period of time." Here are some examples: "The party wasn't over until the cows came home;" "You can diet until the cows come home, but if you don't stop eating chocolate and icecream, you won't lose any weight."
One of our student-friends sent us a very amusing quote from Groucho Marx. In it, Groucho has changed this expression to create a humorous effect. Look:
"I could dance with you till the cows come home. Better still, I'll dance with the cows and you come home."
Do you know which film this quotation is from?
